The Irish Caubeen Our Exclusive Design
The caubeen is a symbol of opposition to governmental oppression and tyranny. It is first seen in a painting of Owen Roe O'Neill, Leader of the Irish confederate soldiers in the civil war between Charles I and Parliament and has been worn since to symbolize opposition to injustice by governmental control. It is distinct in its design and, according to historian Richard Dougherty "So highly individualistic is the caubeen that no two look alike. " The dark-green covering is the trademark headwear of the Irish Regiments in the United Kingdom and Canada. and has been worn in many differing colors by individual groups. It is also sported by Irish pipe bands and those proud of their Erin and Scots-Irish heritage.
Similar to a Balmoral, when "out of the box" (as seen above left), the caubeen takes the personal shape of the wearer after use or "slight" manipulation (left). Some carefully soak their caubeen in water, shape it, then wear it until dry. Caubeens offered by J Byous Company are custom made of 100% wool with satin lining. Tail ribbons are available on "Canadian" regimental caubeens.
