Our Tams are a civilian hybrid designed after Scottish Regimental tams. Popular for centuries in Scotland and Ireland as the headwear of the common man, the Tam O' Shanter styling has evolved from a large crowned cover into the small lap covering used in the current Scottish Regiment. Our caubeens with a ten-inch crown, are mid-sized between the WWII era style with a crown width of eleven inches and the small nine-inch crown style worn in the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan today.
All of our Tam O' Shanters are hand-made by

The caubeen is a symbol of opposition to governmental oppression and tyranny. It is first seen in a painting of Owen Roe O'Neill a leader of the Irish confederate soldiers in the English Civil War between Charles I and Parliament. It has been worn since to symbolize opposition to injustice by governmental control. During the American Revolution the patriots who had recently arrived from Ireland wore the caubeen as standard headwear at home and in the field. Still later when the masses of Irish immigrants arrived during the potato famine, the caubeen was again seen on the streets of America. These individuals are represented in the background scenes in the movie, Gangs of New York.
The caubeen is distinct in its design and, according to historian Richard Dougherty "So highly individualistic is the caubeen that no two look alike. " The dark-green covering is the trademark headwear of the Irish Regiments in the United Kingdom and Canada. and has been worn in many differing colors by individual groups in the Republic of Ireland. Perfect for casual wear or for a community tea-party, it is also sported by Irish pipe bands and those proud of their Erin and Scots-Irish heritage.
